They had joined Jahangirnagar University (JU), cherishing a dream of becoming established in life. But their lives were snuffed out early.
In eight years, 15 JU students were either killed in road accidents or committed suicide.
Last Friday (May 26), Nazmul Hasan Rana and Arafat Hossain died in a road mishap on the Dhaka Aricha highway adjoining the campus. They were third-year students of marketing and microbiology departments, respectively. The entire JU community is yet to recover from the shock.
On August 26 last year, Shahidul Islam Tusher was killed in a road accident in front of the main entrance of the university, called the Dairy Gate. He belonged to the 38th batch of the statistics department and was vice-president of the Bangladesh Chhatra Dal's (BCD's) JU unit.
On July 29 the same year, Arafat Akhter Mishu (22), a second-year student of the anthropology department, died in a road crash. His birthday was celebrated the day before.
On May 24, Jamilur Rahman Jisan, second year, Archeology department, drowned in a pond of the university teachers’ club, despite being able to swim.
Yeakub Ali died in a road accident at Valuka upazila of Mymensingh district on January 26 the same year. He was a 40th batch student of the international relations department.
On March 7, 2015, Tanjilla Rahman Tanni, a third-year student of the public administration department, died in a road crash in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
On October 11 the same year, a bus overturned and fell into the Turag river. Munwara Khatun of the microbiology department was in the bus. She died on the spot.
On May 21, 2014, Fatema Khatun, a third-year student of the anthropology department, had just reached the main gate of the university when a pick-up van snatched her life.
On August 29, 2011, Marzia Jannat Sumi, a 35th batch student of the history department, committed suicide over a trifling matter.
Rafiqul Islam Roton of the government and politics department wanted to support his poor family in future. On April 24, 2011, he died in a bus accident when he was returning to the campus from Narshigdi district.
The same year, Muradur Rahman, who had fallen from the roof of the Shahid Salam-Barkat dormitory, passed away on January 31. He was doing his master’s in English.
Shohanul Hasan, a 33rd batch student of the zoology department, took his own life over a trifling matter in July 2010.
On March 26, 2010, Saima Siddique Shikha died in a road crash in Daulatpur of Comilla. She was a student of the English department.
On April 12 the same year, Farha Naz Ruhi committed suicide at Savar. She belonged to the 38th batch of the economics department.
