Shahidul Alam comes up with groundbreaking photo show

Shahidul Alam, one of the most innovative Bangladeshi artists, came up with a groundbreaking photographic exhibition, which took place yesterday within the premise of Bait Ur Rouf mosque, designed by Marina Tabassum, winner of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for 2016.
The photography exhibition titled ‘Embracing the Other’ was organised by Drik Picture Library. This intimate, brief show is aimed at creating openness and the ability to reach out. The day-long exhibition opened at 10am and continued till 6pm yesterday. The exhibition is expected to tour globally in the near future.
Dr Muhammad Ibrahim, Professor Department of Islamic History and Culture, Dhaka University, the photographer Dr Shahidul Alam who is the Managing Director of Drik Picture Library and Din Islam the imam of the Bait Ur Rouf Mosque spoke at the launch.
Munir M Murali, the Resident Diplomatic Representative at Aga Khan Development Network in Bangladesh, editor of Anannya Magazine Tasmima Hossain, women rights activist Shireen Haque, and many other national and international guests were present at the exhibition.
Shahidul Alam in his speech described Islam as an open and tolerant religion that is misunderstood throughout the world.
Dr Muhammad Ibrahim in the inaugural speech talked about Islam and its scientific rule for life. “Islam advocates beauty and art is a beauty”, he referred to this exhibition.  
Recipient of the Shilpakala Award, photographer, writer, curator and activist Shahidul Alam has been documenting his country’s struggle for democracy for over 30 years. Exhibited in MOMA, Centre Georges Pompidou and Tate Modern and speaker at Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Oxford and Cambridge universities, Alam is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and Visiting Professor at Sunderland University. John Morris, the former picture editor of Life Magazine describes his book, ‘My journey as a witness’ as “the most important book ever written by a photographer”.
