Four decades ago, pairing up together Shabnam and Nadeem acted in the film ‘Ayna’ under the direction of late filmmaker Nazrul Islam. It was one of the most successful ventures in the history of the Pakistan film industry. Even Shabnam won the prestigious Nigar Award, the oldest film award to recognize outstanding achievement in Pakistani cinema, for her great performance in the film ‘Ayna’.
Shabnam moved to Dhaka from Pakistan in the late 80s. However, Shabnam went to attend Karachi Literature Festival in February this year and at the same time, she also visited several universities in Pakistan. During her visit, she shared her experiences on different subjects, including her colourful four-decade career in the Pakistan film industry. The decision of making ‘Ayna’ once again, starring Shabnam and Nadeem, was taken there. This time, the title of the film will be ‘Ayna 2’, which will be directed by Syed Nur. As usual, Shabnam-Nadeem will play two important roles in the film, but this time, the duo will play in the character of father and mother.
Shabnam said, “Meanwhile, shuvo mahurat of ‘Ayna 2’ was held. Everyone related to the film was present there except director Nazrul Islam and music director Robin Ghosh as they are no more on this earth. Two of the songs from the film ‘Ayna 2’ have been dedicated to Robin Ghosh. I am eagerly waiting to act in ‘Ayna 2’. Let’s see what happens next.”
Shabnam informed that the shooting of ‘Ayna 2’ will take place in Canada to meet the demand of the story. Besides, the shooting will also be held in Pakistan for two or three days.
To note, Jharna Basak (known by the stage name Shabnam) is a Bangladeshi stage and film actress. Actor Waheed Murad introduced her to the Pakistani film industry by offering her a lead role in his film ‘Samundar’ in 1968. Shabnam remained active in Lollywood in the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. She has been nominated for Nigar awards several times, winning it 13 times (the most for an actress). She has appeared in over 180 films.
Around 1988, she switched on to character acting and was again doing films in her native Dhaka and Lahore.
Shabnam lastly performed in movie ‘Ammajan,’ directed by Kazi Hayat. She performed in that movie in the central role and it was released in 1999. In 2012 she visited Pakistan along with her husband after 13 years where they were awarded lifetime achievement award by the Pakistani government.
Making her debut with a Bengali film, Shabnam worked in total 160 films, including 152 Urdu films, 14 Bengali and 4 Punjabi films.
