A bomb-like object was found in a school in Shahi Eidgah area of Sylhet city on yesterday morning, report agencies. The school’s students were evacuated after the ‘bomb’ was discovered. Jedan Al Musa, additional deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), said the authorities of 'Scholars Home School' spotted the object on the staircase of the school auditorium around 11 am and informed police.
Later, a team of police from Airport Police Station and a bomb disposal unit of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) went to the spot and cordoned off the school.
Police suspected that the object is an improvised explosive device (IED), Jedan said, adding that efforts to defuse the explosive would begin once the trained RAB bomb disposal unit arrived in Sylhet.
A special bomb disposal team of the elite force started for Sylhet from the capital to conduct further tests on the device and dispose it, said a RAB official.
At the request of the guardians, the students were taken out of school early and allowed to go home around 12:40 pm, said the principal.
The six-storey school building is outfitted with CCTV cameras. According to the principal, students are also searched before they can enter the school.
Law enforcers are reviewing CCTV footages to find how the bomb was planted.
