A Rajshahi court has ordered that the body of a Maldivian model and medical student in Rajshahi, Raudha Athif, be exhumed for a second autopsy.
Metropolitan magistrate Mahbubur Rahman passed the order around 3pm yesterday (Tuesday) in the context of a petition by Inspector Asmaul Haque of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police. He had sought the order from the MM court on Monday. The court, however, also ordered that the exhumation should be carried out in the presence of an additional
district judge. Raudha Athif, a second-year student of Rajsahi Islami Bank Medical College, was found dead in her dormitory on March 29.
Raudha’s father rejected the first autopsy report, alleging that she had been murdered, necessitating a second autopsy. The date of exhumation will be fixed after a Neutral Medical Board is formed, CID inspector Asmaul Haque said.
Earlier, in a petition submitted to the court of metropolitan magistrate Mahbubur Rahman, the CID said Raudha’s body has to be exhumed from her grave. At that time, Inspector Haque said the CID wants the body to be re-examined by a ‘neutral medical board’. They want that there should be no gap in their investigation and her body is important evidence, he said.
The 21-year-old Raudha, who was featured on the cover of ‘Vogue’ magazine, was buried at Hetemkha Graveyard in Rajshahi city on April 1, three days after her death. The police recorded a case of unnatural death filed by the college authorities on the day of her death. Her father Mohamed Athif filed a murder case with a Rajshahi court, accusing a classmate, on April 10.
Shafiqul Islam, Justice of the CMM Court, received the case and ordered Shah Makhdum police station to accept the complaint. The case was later handed over to the CID.
After receiving the order relating to the investigation, a CID team led by additional special superintendent Kazi Muhammad Shafi Iqbal visited Raudha’s room, which had been sealed since her death, in the women’s dormitory of the college on Monday afternoon.
CID officials said they have collected reports from previous investigators of both the cases filed over the death and have launched their investigation.
They have collected various kinds of information, including her roommate’s fingerprints, officials disclosed.
