Stress on making a beggar-free society

Gaibandha: Speakers here on Sunday underscored proper implementation of the programmes to make the country beggar free through active participation of all, reports BSS.
“Begging has become a social problem in the country. It must be removed from the society through appropriate rehabilitation and alternative employment of the beggars” they said.
They were addressing a programme titled “Beggar Free Country” at the conference room of District Collectoate Building here on Sunday with deputy commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad in the chair.
Superintendent of police (SP) M. Masrukur Rahman Khaled, general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, district unit, Abu Bakar Siddique, mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon, civil surgeon Dr. Amir Ali, Sundarganj UNO SM Golam Kibria and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman addressed the function, among others.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) M. Abdus Samad said the government led by Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina adopted a welfare programme aimed at making Bangladesh beggar free by 2018.
Accordingly, various working plans and strategies had been taken by the district administration to make the programme in the district a grand success, he also said.
The DC also sought whole hearted cooperation of all the people including well-off section of the society, leaders of different professional groups, government and non-government service holders and social workers to attain the cherished goal of the programme.Later, DC M. Abdus Samad talked to chief coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in the PM Office Abul Kalam Azad through video conference and presented him about the reasons behind the begging of 6,878 beggars in the district.
He also briefed him about a series of plans and recommendations elaborately to build beggar free Gaibandha district before the stipulated time fixed by the government.
Senior officials of district administration, district level officials, upazila chairmen, UNOs, business leaders, and NGO representatives including journalists of print and electronic media took part in the discussion.
