Bumper mango production predicted

BSS

RANGPUR: Formation of tender mango continues smoothly amid favourable climatic condition now predicting bumper production of the popular fruit in Rangpur agriculture region this season, reports BSS. “The fruit setting stage is progressing superbly now giving mango trees eye-catching looks in orchards, gardens and homestead areas,” said Horticulture Specialist of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam.
He suggested the farmers for proper nursing of their orchards and gardens and controlling pests' attacks, if any, with temperature rise at this stage or sometime later by weevil or other insects for better mango production.
“The farmers could spray insecticides of the Delta Methrin or Cyper groups at the recommended dose or suggested level to the smaller sized growing mangoes for combating mango hoppers,” he said.
He said the farmers could spray Sevin 85 wp (wait-able powder) group pesticides with water at the recommended dose at suggested levels to the growing mangoes sometime later if the temperature rises during the fruit formation process.
Besides, Islam suggested the farmers for spraying fungicides of the Mencozeb or Propiconazole groups at the recommended or suggested doses during fruit formation period to get better production of mango.
According to officials and experts, a brighter prospect for mango production prevails as around 90 per cent of the mango trees bloomed this season in the region.
Deputy Director of the DAE SM Asharf Ali said the farmers had been showing their increasing interests in mango farming on commercial basis as they got repeated bumper production with huge profits in recent years.
“There are about 4.8 million fruit- giving mango trees on some 38,000 hectares of land in the region as the number of mango trees continues increasing every year following expansion of mango cultivation,” he added.
Talking to BSS yesterday, Regional Farm Broadcasting Officer of Agriculture Information Service Abu Sayem said the farmers had been taking extensive preparations, care and measures to get excellent mango yield this time.
