Mijarul Quayes no more

Ambassador to Brazil and immediate-past foreign secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes has passed away at a hospital in Brasilia, the capital of the Latin American country where he was serving since September, 2014. He was 57. According to officials of the foreign ministry, Quayes breathed his last around 9pm (Brazil time) on Friday (Bangladesh time 6am yesterday). His wife and two daughters are now in Brasilia, they said.
The diplomat, who was overweight and fond of eating, was hospitalised in Brasília with serious illness last month and had been in intensive care unit for quite some time, said the officials, adding that he was suffering from various complexities including those related to respiration and kidney and lung.
Earlier in 2012, when he was the foreign secretary, he suffered a respiratory failure with septicaemia, a life-threatening blood infection. He was airlifted to Singapore to be treated at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam and his successor Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque led the tributes for the former top diplomat of the country.
In a message of condolence issued by the foreign ministry yesterday, they offered their deepest sympathy for the family of the bereaved and prayed for the salvation of the departed soul. They also recalled the contribution of Quayes to the country in his long illustrated career.
His colleagues at the ministry and different missions abroad also mourned his death. Announcing the death of Quayes, Brazilian Ambassador to Bangladesh Wanja Campos da NóbregaWanja Campos da Nóbrega also offered her sincere condolences. "On behalf of the Brazilian Government and myself, I would like to present my most sincere condolences to Ambassador Quayes' family, his friends and to the Bangladesh Government," she said.
