Palakar brings ‘Narigon’ to stage on Int’l Women’s Day today

Today, on the International Women’s Day, popular theatre troupe Palakar will stage yet another show of its much-acclaimed production ‘Narigon’ at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the capital.
Noted author-playwright Syed Shamsul Haq wrote the play in 2005. The play is directed by veteran theatre personality Ataur Rahman, who is known as ‘Natya Sarathi’, in the theatre arena.
Though ‘Narigon’ is based on the historic events involving the last independent Nawab of Bengal, Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah’s life, the title - meaning ‘women’ - suggests it focuses on female characters. The play narrates how the women of the royal family survived or what happened to them immediately after the Nawab’s fall. Besides the Battle of Palash, the play focuses on the conjunction of women’s involvement in politics and their social position.
The central characters of the play include Nawab Alivardi Khan’s wife (Siraj-ud-Daulah’s grandmother); Amina Begum and Begum Lutfunnissa (Siraj-ud-Daulah’s mother and wife respectively) and Ghaseti Begum (the Nawab’s aunt who conspired against him).
Aniket Pal Babu choreographed the play, while Thandu Raihan and Ajoy Das set the light design and music direction respectively.
