The 67th birthday of Ekushey Padak winning Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra singer Fakir Alamgir, a leading exponent of Gono Sangeet (songs of the masses), was celebrated at the auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum (BNM) in the capital on Friday.
Presided over by noted cultural personality Kamal Lohani, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon attend the programme as special guest and BNM Secretary Md Shawkat Nabi delivered welcome speech. Besides, Sammilito Sangskritik Jote president Golam Kuddus, Jatiya Kabita Parishad president Dr Mohammd Samad, veteran actor ATM Shamsuzzaman and Suraiya Alamgir, wife of Fakir Alamgir, also expressed their feelings on the occasion.
Rashed Khan Memon said in his speech, “Possessing an ample vocal, this singer (Fakir Alamgir) created a buzz in the country with his songs. His name floats up ultimately whenever the conversation turns to the songs of masses.”
To express feelings on his birthday, Fakir Alamgir spoke about the village. He said the village is his favourite place. Not in the city, he wants to celebrate his future birthdays in village on the bank of river Kumar.”
Artistes of Gono Sangeet Samannay Parishad performed national anthem and opening song ‘Anandaloke Mangaloke’ at the event. Then, a dance was performed with the song ‘Alo Amar, Alo Ogo, Aloy Bhuban-Bhora’.
A documentary on the life and work of Fakir Alamgir was also screened at the programme. In addition, his life was also highlighted through a photography exhibition featuring more than 150 photos.
During the second segment of the programme, Fakir Alamgir performed Gono Sangeet. His performances included patriotic song, Maizbhandari, Kirtan and songs of Mukunda Das. He also sang his most notable songs like ‘Dam Diye Kinechi Bangla’, ‘Bhoy Ki Morone’, ‘Mujib Amar Swapna Sahos’ and others.
To note, son of Hachen Uddin Fakir and Begum Habibunnesa, Alamgir was born on February 21, 1950 at Kalamridha village in Faridpur’s Bhanga upazila.
Alamgir played an important role as a member of Kranti Shilpi Gosthi and Gono Shilpi Gosthi during the mass upsurge in 1969.
During the Liberation War in 1971, he joined the Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendra as an artiste and inspired freedom fighters with his soulful rendition of numerous patriotic songs, says a press release.
In 1976, Alamgir formed Wrishiz Shilpi Gosthi, a musical platform which took Gono Sangeet to a new height and reached to the mass people across the country.
In his successful career, Alamgir received several awards, including Ekushey Padak, Sher-e-Bangla Padak and Bhashani Padak.
