Mural on school wall depicts role of Bengalees against British

A mural, depicting the glorious role of Bengalees during the anti-British movement, has been created on a portion of the wall of Dr Khastagir Government Girls’ High School at Zamal Khan in Chittagong. The 570 square feet mural was inaugurated by AJM Nasir Uddin, mayor of the Chittagong City Corporation, around 11am yesterday.
Sculptors Pranab Sarkar and Ainul Islam Shawn deigned and created the mural. A local daily, Azadi, provided funds and the initiative was taken by councillor Saibal Das Sumon.
At the inauguration programme, the mayor said the desired development had not taken place in Chittagong and so the city was lagging behind in many respects. “To move forward, we have to play a pioneering role. If we have goodwill, dedication and sincerity, everything will be possible,” he added.
The deputy commissioner of Chittagong, Shamsul Arefin, said: “The mural reflects the history nicely. It will encourage students, parents, pedestrians and guests to learn history. Patriotism will develop among the people.”
Ward councillor Saibal Das Sumon said: “The initiative to create the mural was taken to present the history of Bengalees and their tradition and culture. The mural will show the way to our young generation. It will help to keep them away from militancy, terrorism and extremism.”
Among others, Azadi editor MA Malek, panel mayor of the Chittagong City Corporation, Chowdhury Hasan Mahmud Hasni, ward councillors Gias Uddin, Md Zaved, Abida Azad and Anjuman Ara were present on the occasion.
