Government mulls to join e-commerce

Government has planned to join hands with e-commerce giants like Alibaba and Amazon to build network in Bangladesh. But, before entering into any agreement with e- commerce companies, authorities concerned wants to enrich its knowledge regarding e- commerce market.
 “We want to get into e-commerce market and are in talks with big e-commerce companies like Amazon and Alibaba to sign a deal in this regard,” State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Division Tarana Halim told The Independent. “To get maximum benefits out of the deal, we have to understand e–commerce market before signing any contract with Alibaba or Amazon,” Tarana added. She also said “Before signing deals we first need to enrich our knowledge in this field. We have to assess our strength to provide e-commerce services to the consumers.’’ She noted that government has groundbreaking development plans in this field, thus all those cautious moves are done before hand.
According to the Posts and Telecommunications Department, last December, E-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (E-CAB)has launched a pilot project in association with the postal department. The pilot project will create a network for the members of E-CAB where they would be able to purchase and sell product through e-commerce and the postal department will handle the goods delivery.
Primarily, 11 sub post offices will accept goods and 21 sub post offices will deliver goods. To popularise post e- commerce service, Tarana said that the government has plans to start 18 vehicles of postal department to deliver goods. In the near future the government is planning to start the goods delivery cars in divisional and divisional cities as well, informed Tarana.
