United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Yanghee Lee yesterday visited a Rohingya refugee camp at Balukhali in Cox's Bazar to have a firsthand account of the crisis the refugees as well as the Bangladesh government have been facing. Thousands of Rohingyas have fled a military crackdown in Myanmar and crossed into Bangladesh to take shelter in Cox’s Bazar and surrounding areas.
Arriving in the coastal town, Lee went straight to the camp and had intimate talks with about 40 Rohingya people there. She left the camp around 4 in the afternoon and held a meeting with the Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Ali Hossain around 5pm.
Lee is scheduled to visit another Rohingya camp at Teknaf today.
Yanghee Lee arrived in Dhaka on Sunday evening on a six-day visit as a part of her efforts to assess plights of minority Muslims who fled persecution by security forces in Rakhine State and were now residing in makeshift shelters in Bangladesh.
She called on foreign minister AH Mahmood Ali and foreign secretary M Shahidul Haque on Monday.
Meanwhile the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has said it ensured improved healthcare to the refugees from Myanmar and vulnerable residents in Cox's Bazar district, reports UNB.
The ICRC continued to respond to the most urgent needs of the vulnerable households and communities affected by incidents of violence or other situations in Bangladesh, working together with the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), it said sharing facts and figures of 2016.
Throughout 2016, the ICRC continued to work in close partnership with the BDRCS - which acts as an auxiliary to public authorities on humanitarian issues - to raise its organisational and operational capacity to ensure safe and rapid response during any humanitarian emergency.
