Election to Comilla City Corporation (CCC) and by-election to Sunamganj-2 constituency that fell vacant following the death of Awami League lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta will be held on March 30. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda announced the schedule for the election and the by-election at a press briefing held at Nirbachon Bhaban in the capital. According to the schedule, the last date of submitting nominations to CCC polls is on March 2 while the dates for scrutiny of the nomination papers are March 5 and 6, and the last date of withdrawing the nominations is on March 14.
On the other hand, the last date of submitting nominations to the by-elections of the Sunamganj-2 constituency is on March 2. The scrutiny of the papers would be held on March 5 and the last date of withdrawal of nominations is on March 13. The CCC polls were scheduled to go to polls on December 20 last year but it was delayed due to legal complexities on delimitation. The previous commission could not announce the schedule due to the legal barrier. Comilla’s Deputy Commissioner Jahangir Alam was appointed as the city corporation’s administrator. On the other hand, the Sunamganj-2 constituency fell vacant after the demise of the veteran politician of the ruling party Suranjit Sengupta on February 5.
