Banwari Nagar Royal Palace is located at Faridpur upazila of Pabna.
Banwari Lal Roy, zamindar of Tarash in Sirajganj, used to visit the place often for hunting. Its scenic beauty and calm environment made him choose the place as a site for his palace, which he named ‘Banwari Nagar’. The palace complex includes a hawakhana (entertainment house), takshal (treasury house), rani ghat (bathing place for women) and a gateway. At present, the different buildings of the palace are used as upazila and various government offices, as well as the residence of the local administrator. It is a huge compound and you will need at least two hours to see it all.
Banwari Lal Roy was awarded the title of ‘Ray Bahadur’ in 1894 by the British colonial government for his contribution to education and other socio-cultural activities, including establishing Pabna Edward College.
After Roy’s death in 1905, his adopted son, Banamali Lal Roy, became zamindar (landlord). He was famous for setting up Banamali Technical Institute in Pabna town and Banwari High School in Sirajganj. He also donated money to build a new building for Pabna Edward College. Banamali Roy died in 1914. Gradually, the Tarash estate was abolished through the East Bengal State Acquisition and Tenancy Act, 1950.
