Sayeda Khanam, Nasir Ali Mamun get lifetime achievement award

Two pioneering photographers of Bangladesh, Sayeda Khanam and Nasir Ali Mamun have been honoured with the lifetime achievement award at the ninth edition of international photography festival titled ‘Chobi Mela’. The ceremony was held at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the capital on Friday evening.
Besides, a scholarship in the name of the two awardees was also launched at the programme and it would be given to a student for making his study easy at Pathshala, the South Asian Media Academy.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor inaugurated this year’s festival and handed over the crest to the awardees at the programme in the presence of the festival director Shahidul Alam, Iranian photographer Hengameh Golestan, British professor Liz Wells and others.
Sayeda Khanam is the first female photojournalist of the county. She covered many important events during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 through her photography.
On the other hand, Nasir Ali Mamun is an eminent portrait photographer in the country, who is known to many art connoisseurs as ‘Camerar Kobi’ (The Poet with the Camera). He has captured images of many internationally-acclaimed celebrities and creative personalities, including those from the South Asian subcontinent. Till date he has had more than 40 solo photographic exhibitions to his credit.
This year, a number of 27 eminent photographers from 16 countries are participating in the ‘Chobi Mela’ and showcasing their works on the chosen theme ‘transition’ at the National Art Plaza of BSA.
The festival is featuring 29 solo and two group shows at four venues-- National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Beauty Boarding, Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts and Lal Kuthi (Northbrook Hall). Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has been used as main venue and Pathshala South Asian Media Institute has been selected as educational venue where workshops, portfolio reviews and a few artist talks are taking place every day.
