19 killed, 59 hurt in road accidents

Truck ploughs thru crowd in Khagrachhari killing at least 8

At least 19 people, including a policeman, were killed and 59 others injured in separate road accidents in Khagrachhari, Tangail, Cox’s Bazar Sherpur, Natore and Jessore districts since Thusday night. At least eight persons, including three of a family, were killed and eight others injured when a stone-laden truck crushed them after the driver lost control at Alutila area in Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari district yesterday, reports our Khagrachhari correspondent.
The deceased were identified as Neimra Marma, 40, Ukraching Marma, 6, Usanu Marma, 18, residents of Chourangchhari area, and Pulu Marma, 16, Sathoipro Marma, 14, Tuntuni Marma, 6, Ongkaching Marma, 18, and Boby Marma, 16, residents of Matiranga area.
Among those killed, Ukraching, Usanu and their mother Neimra Marma were from the same family, residing in Chongrachari village. Uchinu Marma and Ankoching Marma were from the same village and were school students.
The eight injured persons were identified as Menau Marma, Sukesh Tripura, Chingmau Marma, Chingkiula Marma, Roni Marma, Joni Marma, Umeching Marma and

Mongsha Marma. Critically injured Chikiula Marma, Roni Marma and Boby Marma were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where Boby succumbed to injuries.
Superintendent of police Md Mojid Ali said the accident occurred when a stone-laden truck crashed into a group of Buddhists who had gone to join a programme to mark the cremation of Chandramoni Mohasthabir, a Buddhist preacher of Alutila Alok Nobograho Datuchaitta Budda Bihar. Police arrested truck driver Sumon, the 26-year-old son of Abdul Hoque of Merung village under Dighinala upazila in Khagrachhari district.
Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital’s resident medical officer (RMO) Dr Noyonmoy Tripura said seven people were killed on the spot while nine others were injured. Three critically injured persons have been sent to Chittagong for better treatment, he added.
Khagrachhari lawmaker Kujendra Lal Tripura, Khagrachhari region commander Mir Mushfiqur Rahman, PSC, Khagrachhari municipality mayor Md Rafiqul Alam, additional district magistrate Mohammad Abul Amin, Khagrachhari Hill District Council (KHDC) member Mongshiprue Chowdhury Apu and others visited both spots and the hospital.
Khagrachhari region commander Mir Mushfiqur Rahman, PSC, handed over Tk. 7,000 to each of the families of the deceased and Tk. 3,000 to the kin of each of the injured. KHDC member Mongshiprue Chowdhury Apu handed over Tk. 5,000 to the family of each slain victim and Tk. 3,000 to the family of each injured person. The district administration and Khagrachhari municipality are also preparing lists so as to provide aid to the victims.
Our Correspondent, Tangail adds: 3 people were killed and 25 others injured in a bus-truck collision at Ashequepur under  Tangail Sadar Upazila on Dhaka-Bangabandhu Bridge highway yesterday night. Station Master of Tangail Fire Service Kofil Uddin said that the accident occurred when a bus and a truck collided head on. Driver of the truck and two bus passengers died in the accident. Two were killed on the spot while one died in a hospital. The injured persons were taken to Tangail General Hospital. Five among the injured, including the bus driver and assistant of the truck, are in a critical condition, said doctors.
Again, in Cox’s Bazar district, 3 persons, including a woman and a young boy, were killed and 15 others injured in a collision between a bus and a microbus at Dayalmara on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway in Chokoria upazila on Thursday night, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Arif Hossain, 26, microbus driver, Maria Begum, 50, wife of Momen Hossain of Dholaikhal in Dhaka and Yeamin, 5, son of Masud of New Market area in Dhaka.  The accident took place around 11.45 pm when the Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Shyamoli Paribahan’ collided with the microbus coming from the opposite direction, leaving the trio dead on the spot and 15 passengers of the two vehicles injured, said officer-in-charge of Chokoria Police Station Jahirul Islam Khan.
The injured were taken to Chokoria upazila health complex and Chittagong Medical College Hospital.  Another accident in Sherpur also claimed two lives yesterday.  Two teenage boys were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between a bus and a pickup van at Matiakura in Jhinaigati upazila of Sherpur yesterday morning.
The deceased were identified as Saiful Islam, 14, son of Shamsul Haque, and Hamza, 14, son of Shahidul Islam, both residents of Sonkanda village in Sribordi upazila.
Mizanur Rahman, OC of Jhinaigati police station, said the Sherpur-bound bus from Jhinaigati collided with the pickup van carrying a picnic party, leaving the two dead on the spot and 10 others injured. Three of the injured were admitted to Jhinaigati upazila health complex while eight others were given first aid.
In Natore, a local Awami League leader and a Jubo League activist were killed in a road accident on the Natore-Bogra Highway in Singra upazila. The deceased were identified as Shahadat Hossain Bakul, 45, president of Chamari union unit of Awami League and son of Sakhawat Hossain of Chamari area, and Shamsul Islam, a local Jubo League activist. Sources at Signra Police Station said the accident took place around 9:30pm when a speeding truck hit the motorcycle of Bakul and Shamsul in the Jora Bridge area around 9:30pm while going to Italy union, leaving them dead on the spot. On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to hospital morgue.
Meanwhile, in Jessore, a policeman was killed as a truck crashed into his motorcycle on Monirampur-Dhakuria road in Monirampur upazila of Jessore yesterday. The deceased was identified as Jakir Hssain Dipu, 35, assistant sub inspector of a police station in Thakurgaon district and son of Intaj Ali Sarder of Joypur village in Monirampur upazila. Sub inspector of Monirampur police station Tapos said the speeding truck hit the motorbike of Jakir from the opposite direction on the road at Iman Alir Amtala interaction at noon when he was going to Monirampur Bazar from home, leaving him injured. Jakir was taken to Monirampur upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead, said Mahmudul Hasan, medical officer of the upazila health complex. Relatives of the victim said Jakir came to his village home on January 29 last on leave.
