Rajshahi WASA implements Tk 34cr water supply project

RAJSHAHI: Rajshahi Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (RWASA) has been implementing a project by spending around Tk 34 crore aims at bringing a qualitative change in the city's water supply system, reports BSS. According to officials concerned, implementation works of the two and half-year project is progressing fast since beginning last year.
On successful implementation of the project by this year end, a sustainable water supply system would be built in the metropolis through improvement of both financial and manpower management.
Parvez Mamud, Superintending Engineer of RWASA, said the government has taken the project to increase the supply of safe water to the city dwellers as around 33 per cent of the population doesn't have access to safe drinking water as yet.
Main thrust of the project, ever first of the RWASA after established in 2011, is to increase its coverage to 87 per cent from 67 per cent of the city people.
He said the RWASA is supplying water to the eight lakh city dwellers through a treatment plant and 70 pumps after extracting groundwater. But the population is gradually increasing. Besides, he stated there are 38,713 street hydrants and 3,811 shallow tube wells to provide water to the people.
"After implementation of the project, consumption of safe drinking water in the city would increase to 100-litre from the existing 65-litre," the official said.
The project includes purchasing of 20 mobile generators, installation of 70-km (100 mm), 45-km (150 mm) new pipelines and 20 production tube-wells, rehabilitation work of 115-km pipeline and installation of 100 water flow meters.
One jeep, one double cabin pick-up, one covered pick-up, two water supply tanks and six motorcycles and other equipment would be procured partly with government fund.
Around 55,440-square-meter water is being supplied to 30,263 households and industrial establishments through 512-kilometer pipeline daily against the total demand of 1.19 lakh squire meter.  Around 33 per cent people are still living out of the water supply network in Rajshahi metropolis although they were included in the city corporation 25 years back.
The Rajshahi WASA has started implementing a 40-year water supply management master plan aimed at establishing a dependable and effective water supply and sewerage system in the metropolis.
There is no sewerage system in the ancient city. For this reason, the project has provision to build a proper sewerage network to meet up its future demands.  
According to the officials, 67 per cent of the city dwellers were brought under the water supply network by implementing various projects and steps have been taken to reach water to rest of the city dwellers numbering around 2.62 lakh, in phases.  
Engineer Mahmud said the RWASA is committed to establish a safe water and sewerage management and has been working relentlessly to attain the cherished goal.
