Syed Raiyan
January:
Give Mr Jacket and Mrs Wool sweaters to the poor boys and girls who live down the lane.
Write notes on my mobile notepad and not use paper and save Mr Tree.
February:
Speak only in Bangla to my friends in school, at home and use Bangla text to chat on Messenger. No Bangla word shall I write in English.
March:
Will buy many Bangladeshi flags from my hard-working friends who sell them on the streets and make them rich.
April:
Start enjoying the colourful festival of Bangla New Year.
Let Hilsha Mami live in the river more and a little less on my plate.
Pay all my debts so Business Uncle can write new accounts in a new ledger book.
May/June/July/:
Say thank you to all those who help me stay in solid places, eat and dress well. Kal Boishakhi Mama left behind rain when it visited in April for the New Year. Many more rainy days will I enjoy out in the fields, and not just sitting in front of my window. Will enjoy savories like pakora and sip tea from Tea Stall Mama. Will also send money I normally spend on chocolates and downloading games to the people who will be affected by floodwaters. Will vacation in Cox Bazaar, Saint Martin’s and Sylhet and have 7- flavoured tea from the tea gardens. Or visit tigers in the Sundarbans to see if they are OK.
August:
Mourn for the Father of our Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
September/ October:
Wait to harvest rice.
December:
Say thank you to brave freedom fighters for giving me Bangladesh. Exchange gifts with children in my neighbourhood while I wait for 2018.
