Verdict on appeals of Mufti Hannan, two others today

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on the appeals of three Huji death row convicts including its chief Mufti Abdul Hannan against the High Court judgment that had upheld their death penalty in connection with the 2004 grenade attack killing three persons and injured 70 others, including former British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury.

The two others convicted appellants are Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul and Md Delwar Hossain alias Ripon. After concluding hearing on the appeals, the four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha set the date for delivering its orders on the appeals.
During hearing Attorney General Mahbubey Alam prayed to the apex court to uphold the death sentence of the convicts saying they had directly participated in the attack to kill the UK envoy Anwar Chowdhury.
On the other hand, defense counsel Helal Uddin Mollah prayed to the court to commute the death sentence of the convicts saying that they had been serving in jail for a long period.
Earlier, on February 11, the HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain upheld their death penalty in connection with the case.
The HC also upheld the life imprisonment for two other Huji militants, namely Mufti Hannan’s brother Muhibullah alias Muhibur Rahman alias Ovi, and Mufti Main Uddin alias Abu Zandal.
Bangladesh-born Anwar Chowdhury, barely 18 days into his new assignment, suffered minor leg injuries in the grenade explosion after his Friday prayers.
The blast, which occurred at about 1.40 pm rocked the 700-year-old shrine, located 278km north-east of the capital, in Sylhet on May 21, 2004, sending worshippers running for cover. Three policemen were killed and over 70 injured, including Choudhury.
Kotowali police of Sylhet filed a case against the unnamed accused. Later, on July 31 in 2007, police submitted a chargesheet against four persons, including Mufti Hannan.
Later, police included Mufti Main Uddin alias Abu Zandal in a supplementary chargesheet.
The Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal on December 23, 2008, awarded three militants of Harkatul Jihad (Huji), including its chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, death penalty in connection with the grenade attack.
