Railways Minister Mujibul Haque yesterday said the 21st February had got recognition as the International Mother Language Day by the UNESCO during the tenure of Awami League government in 1999, reports BSS. He was addressing a function marking the 17th anniversary of the announcement of February 21 as the International Mother Language Day by United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) and 3rd death anniversary of Rafiqul Islam who played vital role to get the recognition. The minister recalled the contribution of Rafiqul Islam saying that “Celebrated son of this soil and valiant freedom fighter Rafiqul Islam will be remembered forever for his outstanding role to the country including getting recognition of the 21st February as the International Mother Language Day and during the War of Liberation.” Mujibul called for waging campaign for the day at international level as the people across the country can realize the significance of the day and pay respect to their respective mother tongue.
Mother Language Lovers of the World Society, Bangladesh Chapter, an organisation works on mother language, arranged the function with Bangla Academy Chairman and Professor Emeritus of Dhaka University Bangla Department Dr Anisuzzaman in the chair. Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and Awami League Advisory Council Member Syed Rezaur Rahman addressed the function as special guests while president of Mother Language Lovers of the World Society, Bangladesh Chapter and noted writer Selina Hossain gave the welcome address.
