Eid shopping has already got momentum in markets in Chittagong city, as Eid-ul-fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims, approaching nearer.
 All the city markets are selling commodities necessary for Eid celebration. Shoppers are buying clothes and other commodities for their families and near  ones, crowding in the markets.
During a recent visit to different markets in the city, it was seen that people of all classes are busy with Eid shopping in the markets within their limitation.
The high class people were seen to be busy with shopping in the malls, especially in --- ‘Afmi Plaza’, ‘Sanmar Ocean City’, ‘Akteruzzaman Centre’, ‘Mimi Super Market’, ‘Chittagong Shopping Complex’, ‘Yunusco City Centre’, ‘Amin Centre’, ‘Moti Tower’, ‘Reazuddin Bazar’ and ‘TerriBazar’.
Supplies of goods, including of foreign brands, and varieties of Indian clothes have flooded these shopping centres. Both Indian and local saris are in great demand.
Popular Indian clothes are selling at prices ranging from Tk 5,000 Tk 35,000.
Different brands of local saris like silk, katan, Tangail and Indian Kanjilal are in great demand in the local markets.
Bengaluru silk katan, Anarkoli and Lehenga, Pakhi dresses, and Kiron Mala dresses are being sold at high prices ranging from Tk 5,000 to Tk 50,000.
Kazol Bonik, general secretary, of Mimi Super Market Businessmen Welfare Association, said that most of the public and private employees have started getting their salaries and festival bonuses so shopping is expected to increase within a few days.
“But most of the salesmen said that their sale has not even reached previous years’ records although half of the Ramadan has already passed,”Kazol claimed.
However, shoppers complained that prices of all products have increased comparing with the previous year.
Mondal Mohammad, a buyer at Sanmar Ocean City in GEC area, said the price is very high this season.
“I bought a panjabi for Tk 4,500 which should not be this much”, he added. Meanwhile roadside shops and small shops were found more crowded than big shopping centre.
A large number of makeshift shops have been set up targeting Eid.
Prices of different materials in these markets, particularly cotton, tissue, silk, and synthetic, have registered a sharp rise although the shops are almost full of various garment products.
Most of middle-income people were found to be busy shopping in these markets. They were also buying clothes and other commodities from --- ‘New Market’, ‘Central Plaza’, ‘City Corporation Market’ and ‘Poura Jahur Hawkers’ Market’.
Farhad Hossain, a student of Chittagong University and a regular customer at the Hawkers’ Market, went there on Sunday for Eid shopping with two of his friends from the university.
He bought a panjabi and trousers for himself to celebrate Eid and said low prices have brought him to the market.
Talking to The Independent, shopkeepers of malls and roadsides shops said their business is running good.
They are expecting double sell after 20th Ramadan.
However, as people are busy with shopping, traffic jam is clogging different busy roads in the areas like New Market, Chawkbazar, Probortok, Andarkillah, GEC and Lalkhan Bazar crossings and Agrabad.
Traffic police were seen struggling to tackle the situation at those points.
It has become difficult for buyers and locals to reach their destinations on time due to heavy traffic congestion, alleged people.
