Ghorashal–Polash road in bad shape

A six-kilometre portion of commercially important 13-km-long Ghorashal- Polash road is now in bad shape and can no longer  sustain pressure of heavy industrial goods-laden trucks.
The condition of the road became more precarious due to further damage caused by recent incessant rains.
A repair work on the badly damaged portion, which has not been done in the past seven years, is essential considering the importance of the road.
The communications with the district headquarters and other parts of Polash upazila have been disrupted. Transportation of goods and movement of people are also being hampered greatly.
The road is the only means of communication for the people and industrial goods. Industrial goods like jute bags and hessian cloth, fertilisers, cotton yarn, sugar, cement, RFL plastic products, Pran foods, and various fruits and vegetables are transported through this road every day. Most part of the road has become dilapidated.
The road has its importance as a large number of industries are located on its sides from Ghorasal to Polash. The notable industries are Janata jute Mills, Co-operative Jute Mills, Fouji Jute, Pran Food Factory, Pran Industrial Park, RFL Industry ,Ghorashal Fertiliser Factory, Polash Fertiliser Factory, Asaf Textile Mills, Ghorashal Power Plant, Cement factory, Deshbandhu Suger Mills. Besides, there are brick fields and schools and colleges in those places.
The road has developed numerous potholes and cracks, making a big portion of it virtually unusable. Trucks, buses, minibuses, tempos,   CNG-run auto-rickshaws, rickshaw van, and rickshaws run on the road at risk. About 25,000 workers, staff and employees of different industries, mills and factories take this road to go to their work places in difficulties.
Moniruzzaman, Executive Engineer of Roads & Highways Department  in Narsingdi, said this road was officially  handed over to Ghorashal municipality for maintenance about one year ago.
He said the Ghorashal Pourashava authority is yet not start repair works for shortage of fund. He, however, said this road repair work will start in the coming dry season.
