How did you get into drawing game characters and what inspired you?
Thanks to my artist parents, my late father Mahboob Akand and mother Mahmuda Begum, I had the privilege of growing up in an environment where art was appreciated and encouraged a lot. I have been drawing from a very early age as a hobby, and was always interested in comic book characters, especially super hero types. I remember drawing characters from cartoons like Thunder Cats. Later on I got the chance to play video games when my father bought a computer, this was in 1996 or 1997. My father worked professionally as a computer graphics artist, he did a lot of TV commercials and also desk top publishing work. I used to watch him work on his computer and picked up some knowledge of some of the software he used. I taught myself a little bit of 3D Studio Max. I also worked with my father on some of the TV commercials where I created 3D animations. Fast forward to 2006, I graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York and got my first job in a game development studio and started creating characters professionally.
How would you define the role of a 3D artist? How would you describe your style in art?
The specific role can be very different from one studio to another. But in general, the role of a 3D artist is to take the tools and resources at his/her disposal and use them to their maximum potential to create aesthetically appealing visuals, which will interest the viewers. The artist has to create something that pleases all the developers, and at the same time, creates great visuals for the fans, who are the final customers of our product. My art style is mostly realistic or exaggerated realism. However, I try not to corner myself into any particular style and try to stay flexible enough to be able to work in a variety of projects and styles.
Please tell us about your biggest achievements.
I do not really think too much about achievements, but there are a few projects that I liked a lot and I am proud to have had the chance to work in. One such game is ‘Dishonored’, developed by Arkane Studios. I had the pleasure of working on many characters for this game and I also enjoyed playing the game. Arkane Studio has done an amazing job in creating an unique art style and an interesting world with several new gameplay techniques, which keep the gamers interested and engaged like very few other games do.
What’s your future plan?
So far, the plan is to keep doing what I love doing _ which is creating art for video games. There are lots of new tools I am interested to learn and hopefully, I will also learn to create better and more interesting characters in the future.
