Mehedi Hasan Miraz

Mehedi Hasan Miraz has emerged as one of the brightest young stars in Bangladesh cricket. He led the country on its first appearance in Under-19 World Cup semi-final in February, before making the year more memorable with his Test debut, against England in October.
He is a batting all-rounder, who bowls right-arm off spin with a quiet action, where he trundles to the wicket before giving a slight leap while rotating his upper body. It is a beautifully simple action that has yielded him many wickets at the U-19 and first-class levels.
Born in Barisal, Mehedi grew up in Daulatpur on the outskirts of Khulna city. He learned off spin from Sheikh Salahuddin, the former Bangladesh player regarded as the best off spinner of his generation. Sadly, Salahuddin passed away in October 2013.
Mehedi spent two years at the U-19 level, captaining Bangladesh to the 2014 World Cup in the UAE. He made his first-class debut in the 2014-15 National Cricket League, but it was the next season’s tournament where he really made a mark. Mehedi took 30 wickets at 16.43, including three five-fours. He was a star in the 2016 U-19 World Cup, with his spirit coming through as a standout part of his character.
Mehedi had a dream debut series as a Test player. After the remarkable 2016 Under-19 World Cup there was never any doubt in the team management’s mind that they had found an exceptional talent. In fact, his debut in the national team echoed that of Australia’s unveiling of Shane Warne on the 1993 Ashes tour. Mehedi was expected to debut against Afghanistan in ODIs, but was deliberately left out to keep him a secret from England.
On October 20, Mehedi made his Test debut against England. Even though he is an off-break bowler, he opened the bowling in his maiden Test innings. Ben Duckett, another debutant in that Test match, became Mehedi’s first Test wicket. In the same match, he also became the seventh and youngest Bangladesh player to take a five-wicket haul on his Test debut. In his second Test match, he became the sixth bowler to take three five-for in his first two Tests. He took 19 wickets altogether in the Test series and became the ninth player, the first from Bangladesh, to win the man-of-the-series award in his debut Test series.
Even though he had a horrible series as a batsman, scoring only 5 runs in 4 innings at an average of 1.25, national team captain Mushfiqur Rahim lauded the performance of the 19-year-old,
“Mehedi is a good batsman, also. He didn’t show that now, but hopefully, in future he will be a great all-rounder for Bangladesh” said Rahim.
