Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan
Assamese schoolgirl Nahid Afrin, 14, became a singing sensation after coming second in the 2nd season of Indian Idol Junior last year. Not only did she become a household name across India, but thanks to satellite TV, her melodious voice also reached and charmed millions in other countries, including Bangladesh.
Nahid, a student of class 9 at an English-medium school in Biswanath Chariali, Assam, sang a variety of songs during the competition to reach the top 13. Based on the remarks of the judges, many believed that she would become the champion.
After her Idol journey, Nahid did not have to look back. She won a contract with Universal Music and has released some Hindi and Assamese singles, alongside performing live at various places. Her first playback song for a movie, Sonakshi Sinha’s ‘Akira’, was released in August.
She recently travelled to New York and London to perform. But Nahid’s first overseas tour was to Bangladesh last year. She performed in Dhaka and Sylhet, and sang some Bangla songs as well. Y&I recently talked to her about her Idol experience, inspiration and future plans.
Before the competition, did you ever think that you would do so well?
No. I never thought that I would be even among the top 10. My objective was to learn from the learned mentors, not to win the show.
Were you surprised when you came second, rather than first as many expected?
No. I was not at all surprised, honestly, because I didn’t even expect to reach top 3. It meant a lot to me.
Who do you want to thank for your success?
I want to thank Allah, of course, and then all the members of my family
When did you start learning music?
I started learning music when I was 6 years old. But I have been singing since I was 3.
How do you coordinate your studies and busy performance schedule? For you which is more important _ education or music?
Well, it’s a common question. Whenever I get free time, I utilise it either for my studies or music. For me, both are very important.
What type of songs are you comfortable with?
Mostly, I love soft melodies. It may be Indian or Western. As I want to become a versatile artist, I try all genres.
How did you feel when you got the offer to sing in Bollywood?
It was, indeed, an unbelievable moment for me. I didn’t think that I would ever get a chance to sing in Bollywood. At that very moment, I just thanked Allah...I felt nothing else.
What is your ultimate objective _ a music career in Bollywood or Assam, or both?
I haven’t decided yet. Let the time come. Right now, I am just focussing on my education and music.
How did you find Bangladesh and its people?
Well, Bangladesh is a very beautiful country. I loved Dhaka. The people are awesome there. They enjoyed my singing and cooperated. I also went to Sylhet. It is adorned with natural beauty which mesmerised me. I was extremely pleased.
What is your message to Bangladeshi children who want to learn music?
I am not at all eligible to give any advice, rather I would like to suggest to my Bangladeshi brothers and sisters to always work hard, especially in the world of music. Even if you become one of the best musicians, stay humble. Always, respect your parents and never forget your teachers.
What is the difference between Nahid Afrin before Idol and Nahid Afrin today?
No difference at all. But, yes, I have become busier now than before.
