The newly decorated Zainul Abedin Gallery has been launched in the capital’s Bangladesh National Museum. Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith inaugurated the gallery as chief guest on Saturday, while Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Managing Director of IFIC Bank Shah Alam Sarwar and eminent Rabindra Sangeet singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya were present as special guests at the launching ceremony. Presided over by eminent artist Hasem Khan, Director General of BNM Faizul Latif Chowdhury delivered the welcome speech.
Curated by Drik and supported by IFIC Bank, the Gallery No. 35 of Bangladesh National Museum, where the paintings of Zainul Abedin were displayed earlier, has now been decorated in a new style. With the name Zainul Abedin Gallery, the art gallery is currently displaying a total of 47 art works of Zainul Abedin.
Monpura‘70, a painting on the devastating tidal waves in Monpura of Bhola in 1970 and Life and Struggle is put on display inside the circle and hanging it from the ceiling. The artworks which are also on display for the visitors have been divided into 4 parts—Unmesh, Wriju Zainul, Notun Angink and Jonogoner Shikkhok.
Besides artworks, a documentary based on the life and works of Zainul Abedin and around 100 paintings of Zainul Abedin are also being screened on the video monitor at the gallery.
Asaduzzaman Noor in his speech said about the gallery, “When I saw the newly decorated gallery, I and artist Hasem Khan could not be satisfied. There is something lacking and we will recover it very soon.”
“We did not pay proper respect to Zainul Abedin what he actually deserved. I think the main art gallery of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy should be set up in the name of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin”, he added.
Abul Maal Abdul Muhith recalled the old memories he passed with Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin and said that Zainul Abedin was a prolific painter. To display all of his work to the visitors, a large gallery is needed. He then asked to Cultural Ministry to set up Zainul Abedin Gallery at the Shilpakala Academy and assured that his government will help in every possible way. l
