Livestock dept launches free SMS treatment service

The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) yesterday formally launched free livestock and poultry treatment and consultation services for the rural farmers through online and mobile phone text messaging services (SMS), reports BSS. “This (service) is part of our government’s initiatives to ensure 100 per cent treatment services for increased the livestock and poultry production in the country,” Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Sayedul Haque said inaugurating the services at the DLS at Khamarbari here. Officials familiar with the process said rural farmers who rear cattle and poultry at their homesteads and in remote char areas across the country will get free consultation and treatment services from the upazila livestock officials through short message service (SMS) of the mobile phones within few seconds. They said the farmers would get immediate solution to their problems with livestock if they could briefly explain them in writing and send to 16358 from any mobile phone.
“Within five seconds the farmers will get the solution to their problems through the return messages in their mobile phones,” officer in charge of DLS’s ICT section Sohrab Hossain said.
Besides, he said, the rural people would get their required services through online using the address—sms.dls.gov.bd --. The farmers will get services on the problems like Gorur Kadhe Gha, Gorur Jor, Gorur Pet Fula, Gorur FMD, Goru Khaina, Gorur Khora Rog, Gorur Patla Paikhana, Gorur Olan Fula, Chagoler Sordi, Chagoler Cholera, Chagoler PPR, Murgir Lal Paikhana, Murgir Sada Paikhana, Kobutorer Ghar Baka, Kobutorer Diarrhoea, Verar Jor and Verar Posom othe Jasse.
DLS officials said their SMS service was the outcome of a joint initiative by A2i Programme of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS). Director General (Admin) of the Prime Minister’s Office and Project Director of the A2I Programme Kabir Bin Anwar termed as a ‘milestone’ the initiative for the welfare of the marginal people of the country.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary M Maksudul Hasan Khan spoke at the function as the special guest while Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Ajoy Kumar Roy was in the chair.
UNB reports from Bagerhat adds: The Khulna-Mongla rail track will be laid ‘dividing the Government Buffalo Reproduction and Development Farm’ in Fakirhat upazila. A committee, formed to resolve the complication over the construction of the alignment of the 64.75 km Khulna-Mongla rail track through the buffalo farm, gave the recommendation at a meeting at Bagerhat Circuit House on Saturday with its president Dr Mashiur Rahman in the chair.
Dr Mashiur Rahman, also the Economic Affairs Adviser of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said that the committee suggested shifting the sheds of the farm to 150 yard north-westward from the existing location.
Alongside, an alternative communication way will be built inside the farm and additional spaces will be arranged for the accommodation of the employees in the area, Rahman added.
As both the farm and the rail line are very important, the committee worked with the local MPs, government officials and local leaders to bring out a quick and suitable solution, he said.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district Tapan Kumar Biswas said some 20 acres of lands will be acquired to build sheds for making new accommodation of the buffalos. In 1984-85, the government established the buffalo farm on 80 acres of land beside Khulna-Mongla highway in the upazila aiming to reproduce hybrid species of buffalos through natural breeding. The Government Buffalo Reproduction and Development Farm has some 530 buffalos at present.
