The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has decided to finally scrap the freedom-fighter certificate of Public Works Department (PWD) chief engineer Hafizur Rahman Munshi Tipu after getting a field report from local freedom fighters. On September 6 this year, Liberation War Affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque, in an official memo (48.00.0000.004.461.16-281), told the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council to take steps to scrap the official’s allegedly fake freedom-fighter certificate.
The official letter, which was obtained by The Independent, said there was no scope for considering Hafizur Rahman Munshi Tipu a freedom fighter as per the definition of the term. Haque exclusively told The Independent yesterday evening that if the local freedom fighters’ command council filed a damaging report, the engineer’s freedom-fighter certificate would be scrapped within a month.
On why the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council had asked the local freedom fighters’ command council to submit their report, Haque, also chairman of the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council, said other ministers and MPs had told him to do so.
According to official sources, a meeting was held at its Kakrail office in the city on Thursday, presided over by Liberation War Affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque himself.
Talking to The Independent yesterday, shipping minister Shajahan Khan, who is also a member of the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council (Jamuka), said, “As far as I know, the final decision will be taken after getting the field report.”
Punnobrota Chowdhury, director general of the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council, acknowledged that he had got a letter from the Liberation War affairs ministry, directing him to take steps to scrap Hafizur Rahman Munshi Tipu’s fake freedom fighter certificate.
