On October 15, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s eighth meeting with the leaders of BRIC countries in India, the English-language newspaper page “China• Yunnan” was launched in Delhi, India. The new bilateral cooperation is between Yunnan Daily Press Group (YDPG), China and Indian’s The Pioneer. It is the first Chinese newspaper page that has been issued in India.
For the first edition of “China•Yunnan”, YDPG specially prepared four pages of news stories to fully reflect Yunnan province’s economic, educational, tourism and cultural cooperation with India, all in a narrative way familiar to Indian readers. The content-rich, well-designed newspaper page immediately aroused the interest of Indian readers. The Pioneer’s editor Ms. Rinku Ghosh said her newspaper attaches great importance to this new cooperation with YDPG, so much so that The Pioneer has provided a link to “China•Yunnan” at the top of its webpage. After the launch, some readers called the newspaper to inquire about the situation and many Indian media peers and opinion leaders also expressed their approval for the new cooperation between Yunnan and Indian media.
YDPG also introduced its “China•Yunnan” to Indian readers through Facebook, Twitter and other foreign social media platforms. The coordinated actions of this new press campaign quickly drew the attention of Indian netizens. In less than a day, the news story “Yunnan and India coming closer” received 5,000 views on Facebook. An article introducing all of the world heritage sites in Yunnan registered nearly 4,000 views on its first day of publication. Statistics show that the Indian readers of “China•Yunnan” are mainly web users between the ages of 18 and 24.
The Pioneer, founded in 1865, is one of India’s oldest mainstream broadsheets, and is highly influential across the country. Starting in November 2016, The Pioneer will publish the “China• Yunnan” page on a weekly basis to provide Indian readers from all walks of life with a wide range of useful information on Yunnan’s exchanges and cooperation with other countries.
