Cultural arena remembers Poet Shamsur Rahman today

In memory of noted poet, writer and columnist Shamsur Rahman on his 88th birth anniversary today, Bangla Academy, National Poetry Council and Shamsur Rahman Smriti Parishad have jointly organised a programme featuring discussion, poetry recitation and song performance in the capital’s Bangla Academy premises.
Presided over by President of Bangla Academy and Shamsur Rahman Smritiparishad President Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman, National Poetry Council president poet Muhammad Samad will deliver the welcome speech at the discussion, where noted cultural personalities Ramendu Majumder,  Rabiul Hossain, Mohammad Nurul Huda and Rafiqullah Khan will be present as discussants. Poet’s nephew (son of the poet’s younger brother) and Chairman of Poet Shamsur Rahman Foundation, Barrister Toufiqur Rahman will also take part in the event on behalf of the poet’s family.
In the cultural part, Bhaskar Bandyopadhyay, Laila Afroz, Shahadat Hossain Nipu, Tamanna Sarwar Nipa will recite poems by Shamsur Rahman.
Nirmalendu Goon, Rubi Rahman, Nuh-Ul-Alam Lenin, Sazzad Kadir, Asim Saha, Kazi Rozi, Shihab Sarkar, Kajol Bondopadhyay, Rabindra Gope, Nasir Ahmed, Kamal Chowdhury, Muhammad Sadiq, Dilara Hafiz, Halim Azad, Bulbul Mahalanabish, Aslam Sani, Bodrul Haider and others will also recite poetry at the event.
On the other hand, Mahiuzzaman Chowdhury, Sharmin Sathi Islam and Suma Ray will render songs at the event.
Besides, Channel i will air a special episode of art, culture and literature- related programme titled ‘Shilpa Binodan’ dedicating poet Shamsur Rahman today at 5:50pm.
The programme will feature poetry recitation by Asaduzzaman Noor, Al Mansur and Daliha Ahmed. In the programme, educationalist Dr Anisuzzaman and Indian poet Sangkar Sen will talk about the literature of poet Shamsur Rahman while Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and Poet Kamal Chowdhury will share their thoughts on the life and work of the poet.
Anchored by Rokeya Prachi, Sammilito Sangkritik Jote President Golam Kuddus and National Poetry Council President Poet Muhammad Samad will recall the memories on poet Shamsur Rahman.
To note, born in 1929, was a Bangladeshi poet, columnist and journalist, who emerged in the later half of the 20th century, wrote more than sixty books of poetry and is considered a key figure in Bengali literature. Shamsur Rahman's first book of poetry, ‘Prothom Gaan Dwityo Mrittyur Agey’ (First Song Before the Second Death) published in 1960.  His famous poem ‘Shadhinota Tumi Robi Thakurer Ojhor Kobita, Obinashi Gaan’,  was written in 1971 during the Liberation War in Bangladesh. Besides, he wrote novels, children's literature, and an autobiography. He received ‘Adamjee Award’ in 1962, ‘Bangla Academy Award’ in 1969, ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 1977, ‘Swadhinata Dibosh Award’ in 1991, Mitsubishi Award of Japan  in 1992 and many more. He died on August 17, 2006 when he was 77.
