Bangladesh reopened its embassy in Algeria on 16 October 2016 after a gap of nearly 23 years, the Foreign Ministry announced yesterday. Bangladesh Ambassador-designate to Algeria Md. Abdul Hye is expected to join the Mission soon, said a press release issued by the mission. The Charge de Affaires, a.i. Md. Shahjahan will be conducting the day-to-day affairs until the Ambassador-designate joins the Mission. Bangladesh had earlier opened its Diplomatic Mission in Algeria August 10, 1973 which was later closed down in 1993.
Algeria was among one of the first Arab countries to accord recognition to Bangladesh. Algeria sponsored Bangladesh’s admission into the Non-Aligned Movement through the Fourth NAM Summit Conference held in Algiers in September 1973 and played a key role in Bangladesh’s entry into the OIC. Bangladesh enjoys brotherly bilateral relations with Algeria based on commonalities of history, tradition and religious faith. To strengthen the bilateral relations the government took decision to reopen Bangladesh Embassy in Algeria at the backdrop of the emerging political, trade and economic importance of Algeria in the African continent and in the global scenario. It is hoped that the reopening of Bangladesh Mission in Algeria will usher in newer avenues of enhancement of substantive cooperation in the fields of trade and commerce, economic and social development and promote people-to-people contacts for mutual benefits of the two countries.
