Sheikh Iraj
When and why did you decide to become a comedian?
When I was in school, my friends and I used to perform jokes for each other. There, I noticed that my friends laughed at my jokes more, even when our other friends were performing the same jokes. It was my presentation that my friends liked. Understanding this, I took comedy a little more seriously. I worked in a NGO (non-governmental organisation) for six years before deciding to become a professional comedian this year. My family didn’t support me in the beginning, so I took it as a challenge. So far this year, I have already done over 30 shows. Right now, we have 40 different comedy clubs in Bangladesh where fresh and talented comedians are performing on a regular basis. Besides taking part in different comedy shows on TV channels, I also take part in various private events. I am earning enough to make a living.
Do you write your own material? Where do you get new ideas from?
It won’t be the truth if I say I write all my jokes. I talk to other comedians regularly about different jokes. During our conversations, new ideas emerge. I listen to their jokes and after some alterations, I perform those jokes in my own style. When it comes to jokes, there is no specific time as to when you will get a new idea. Ideas may appear in your head while you are crossing the street in broad daylight, or even while you are sleeping! Whenever a new idea comes to my mind, I make a quick note of it on my mobile phone. I also like to collect ideas from famous, well-established comedians and their jokes. I collect ideas from different sources over the internet. I like to use distinctive punchlines for different jokes.
Please tell us about your favourite comedians.
Mir Afsar Ali, Abu Hena Rony and Solaiman Shukhon are my favourite standup comedians.
How do you deal with hecklers?
Always keep your cool. A quote of Harry Hill, a famous English comedian, comes to my mind when someone heckles, “You may heckle me now, but I am safe in the knowledge that when I get home I have a lovely chicken in the oven.”
Please tell us about your biggest achievements.
Becoming the second runner-up in the comedy show, Mirakkel Season 9, and now being able to say that I am a professional comedian, are some of my biggest achievements.
What’s your future plan?
Right now, with other members of the Bangladesh Comedy Club, we are starting a comedy club in Cox’s Bazar. We will conduct workshops there and we plan to do shows regularly. I love making people laugh and I want to make people laugh for the rest of my life.
