Govt stipends for poor students in schools, madrasas

The education ministry would give monthly stipends to poor students in schools and madrasas through mobile bKash accounts, sources said. An agreement in this regard was signed between the Secondary Education Sector Investment Programme (SESIP) under the education ministry and Agrani Bank Ltd yesterday. SESIP programme director Prof. Md Wahiduzzaman and Agrani Bank Ltd deputy managing director Ismail Hossain signed the agreement at the Secretariat. Education secretary Sohrab Hossain was also present on the occasion.
Under the agreement, the stipend will be given to at least three lakh poor students from Class VI to Class X in 54 upazilas of 17 districts. While students from Class VI to Class VII will receive Tk. 100 per month, those in Class VIII will get Tk. 125. Those in Class IX and Class X will receive Tk. 170 and Tk. 210, respectively. Each of the stipend receivers will also get Tk. 15 to Tk. 20 per month as tuition fees. Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or Dakhil examinees will receive an additional Tk. 750 as examination fees. A total of Tk. 150 crore will be distributed among these students through personal bKash mobile account numbers effective from July 2016 to December 2017. “It’s not compulsory that the students should have their own mobile sets. The mobile sets of their family members or the schools are enough for it,” said Wahiduzzaman, who is also the director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (DSHE). SESIP joint programe director Abu Syeed Sheikh said, “The poor students were selected on the basis of recommendations by the school management committee. The committee has listed the students by assessing their family income.” He also said Agrani Bank Ltd has made an agreement with bKash, which would help open the accounts for the students. Education secretary Sohrab Hossain urged all concerned to work with honesty and sincerity to render their services in disbursing the stipends.
