Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan became the leading wicket-taker of Bangladesh and thereby inscribed his name as only man in the world cricket to be his country’s most successful bowler in all three formats of the game. Already Bangladesh's most prolific wicket-taker in Tests (147 wickets) and T20 internationals (65 wickets), left arm spinner Shakib eclipsed Abdur Razzak in the first ODI against Afghanistan yesterday.
Before starting the game, Shakib was just two wickets away from Razzak (207 wickets) but it seemed forgone conclusion that he would surpass the record in the first game.
He equaled Razzak by removing Afghan opener Shabir Noori with a straight delivery before spending a tensed period to go past him.
As Hashatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah stood tall with a stellar performance, things went wrong for him. They combined for an Afghan national record of 144 runs for the third wicket to pose a huge threat.
Shakib however broke the dangerous partnership when he got Rahmat with a delivery that foxed him to miss the line. Mushfiqur Rahim was smart enough behind the wicket to do his job perfectly.
The late introduction of T20 cricket into international cricket accounts for the fact that, currently, no bowler leads the way for his country in all three formats.
However, seven of the nine other Test-playing nations has one bowler on top of the pile in Test and ODI cricket; England's Jimmy Anderson, India's Anil Kumble, Pakistan's Wasim Akram, South Africa's Shaun Pollock, Sri Lanka's Muthiah Muralidaran and Zimbabwe's Heath Streak are their country's most prolific bowlers in Test and ODIs. Australia (Shane Warne in Tests, Glenn McGrath in ODIs, Shane Watson in T20s) and New Zealand (Sir Richard Hadlee in Tests, Daniel Vettori in ODIs, Nathan McCullum in T20s) have different bowlers topping their respective lists across all forms.
