Some 130 megawatt of electricity has been added to the national grid yesterday on an experimental basis from the newly built Bhola 225-megawatt gas-based power plant.
Sources said the construction work on the power plant was initiation in Borhanuddin upazila of Bhola on 40 acres of land in 2013 at a cost of about Tk 2,000 crores.
Harunur Rashid, project director of the Bhola power plant said power supply from the unit has started on a trial basis yesterday. At an initial stage only 7 megawatt electricity has been pushed into the grid to check if the supply is normal. In this way the electricity will be pushed into the gird gradually.
After completion of trail production, the plant will formally be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The power plant will go into full production by next October, he expects.
Mrinal Kanti, project director of Power Grid Company of Bangladesh, said the construction work on a sub- station in Gariarpar of Barisal and 230 KV transmission line was completed at cost of about Tk 376 crores to transmit power from Bhola plant to the national grid.
Besides, the construction of seven high capacity towers on the seven kilometre long Tetulia River was also completed, sources added.
The plant will get the gas supply from a gas field discovered in Kachia union of Borhanuddin upazila in 1996 by BAPEX, the state-owned petroleum exploration company.
