Nutrition and Wellness Club of the University Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) held another exciting campus event on August, 20, 2016 titled Learning Nutrition and Wellness with comics, says a press release. Bangladesh Institute of ICT Development (BIID) supported and encouraged to make this event successful. Shakeer Munim, consultant, BIID and Ismat Jahan, Ismat Jahan, public relation manager, BIID joined the event.
At the beginning of the event, Arzoo Ismail, advisor, ULAB Nutrition and Wellness Club gave an inauguration speech where she emphasized the importance of healthy eating and living by sharing some dos and don’ts for example, making breakfast the biggest meal of the day, eating fruits and vegetables available in Bangladesh, taking early dinner, having snacks full of micronutrients, avoiding carbonated and sugary drinks, avoiding fast food, going to bed early, cut down time on the Internet especially at late hours etc. She shared a standard diet for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner as suggested by Asfia Azim, nutritionist, Concern Worldwide.
After that, a keynote speech was delivered by the guest speaker, Tahseen Salman Choudhury on “Learning Nutrition and Wellness with Comics”. He is the host of the radio show “Comicbaj” on Colours FM 101.6. Choudhury used examples from local and international comic books and characters to discuss healthy eating and living. Couple of examples he used are: ‘Popeye The Sailor Man’ a comic character who eats spinach to gather his strength, Batul The Great another comic character who is buffed up by eating and exercising. He also used examples from the ever popular animation Meena, Shabash by Mighy Punch Studios and many more. Choudhury also said what happens if someone follows bad food habit and unhealthy living showing examples from different comic stories. He then showed an example of a comic story he prepared regarding the topic and asked the club members to come up with their own comic stories highlighting the importance of nutrition and wellness in our lives.
In total, 21 club members took part in the workshop and there were three winners. Arzoo Ismail, Tahseen Salman Choudhury, Shakeer Munim, and faculty member Moniruzzaman Shipu judged the comic stories.
The first prize winner received a crest from BIID, a comic book from the guest speaker, a certificate from the club, and also have been invited by Choudhury to join him at his show ‘Comicbaj’ on ColoursFM 101.6. The second and third prize winners received certificate and comic books.
