2 ‘JMB commanders’ killed in ‘shootout’ with police

Two suspected commanders of Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were killed in a 'shootout' in Shirajnagar village of Sherpur upazila in Bogra on Sunday night. The deceased were identified as Khalid Hasan alias 'Badar Mama', 30, son of Anamul Haq of Hamidpur village under Nachole upzila in Chapainawabgonj district, and 'Ripon', 25, son of Golam Sobur of Pathanpara village under Boalai upzila in Rajshahi district. Police recovered one pistol, four bullets, and grenade-making materials from their possession. Bogra police claimed that the two militants were commanders of JMB’s militant wing in the northern region. On Monday, The Independent carried out an exclusive story, titled “2nd tier of New JMB militants ‘on the run’” where Khaled and Ripon were in the list of absconding militants. According to an official of the Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crime (CTTC) Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, operational commander Ripon was known as ‘Boro Bhai’ to the nine militants who were killed during a special drive of police in Kalyanpur in the capital last month.
Ripon, also an important tier 2 (operational commander) member of the New JMB, was directly involved in more than a dozen militant attacks in Rajshahi division. According to the CTTC official, Ripon acted as the incident commander which the JMB leaders appoints before each militant operation.
About Khaled, the Additional Deputy Commissioner said, first he was an operational commander of the New JMB but after his charismatic leadership in militant activities, the New JMB chief Tamim had recently promoted him as the regional commander of JMB for the whole northern division. Khaled has also expertise in operating heavy arms along with deadly grenades, he said. He was providing training to the new members of the militant outfit JMB and after getting training from Khaled, one of his student, identified as Bijoy, became an expert grenade maker.
Md Gaziur Rahman, Bogra’s senior assistant superintendent of police, said Khalid was involved in the attempt to murder Italian priest Piero Parolari and the attack on Kantajew Temple in Dinajpur in November and December last year, respectively.
Gaziur Rahman also said that Ripon was present at a meeting at his own home where the murder of Rajshahi University’s English teacher AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee was plotted. He confirmed that the meeting was attended by Khalid, ‘Bike Hasan’, who was killed in a crossfire in Rajshahi, and ‘Badhon’, the militant who was killed in the raid that ended the siege at Gulshan’s Holey Artisan Bakery.
Prof. Rezaul Karim was hacked to death on April 23 near his home in Rajshahi city’s Shalbagan area. The attackers were killed the next morning in an army operation, which also freed at least 13 hostages.
Md Mizanur Rahman, inspector of Sherpur police station, said they were tipped off about a secret meeting of six to seven JMB members. A police team, led by him, went to the spot around 11pm on Sunday night. Sensing the presence of police, the JMB members started firing at members of the law enforcement team, prompting them to retaliate. The fight lasted till 3:30am. Khalid and Ripon died on the spot while others fled the scene.
Soon after the incident, Abdul Jalil, additional superintendent of police, and Gaziur Rahman visited the spot.
Khalid and Ripon were taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead. Two police officers were also injured during the shootout and were given first aid there. Talking to The Independent, another CTTC official, who did not want to be named as he was not entitled to talk to the media, said both Khaled and Ripon met mastermind Tamim several times, some Gulshan attackers and others militants coming at the different militant dens including  Kallayanpur military den.
“We came to know that Ripon and Khaled were preparing to take revenge after their main boss Tamim was murdered,” he said, adding that after the deaths of Khaled and Ripon, the second tier of the JMB will face a serious crisis.
