Students of the Science and Home Economics groups who have just passed their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations are likely to face tough competition in getting into the universities of their choice, as the number of successful students far outstrips the availability of seats. The competition is expected to be tougher this year because passed students and Gross Point Average (GPA)-5 holders from these two streams under the eight education boards is higher than last year's.
In 2016, a total of 41,468 students have got GPA-5 compared to only 26,556 last year. Moreover, the total number of students who passed from the Science and Home Economics groups is 1,58,476 this year, compared to 1,51,259 in 2015. Science students generally prefer medical and dental colleges, good universities, or engineering colleges to pursue higher studies, but the seats available fall short of the number of aspirants. Sources said there were around 9,019 seats in all the government and non-government medical and dental colleges in the country. Of them, 3,162 seats are in 29 government medical colleges and 5,325 in 64 non-government medical colleges, while 532 seats are in the nine government dental colleges.
Besides, there are 38 public universities in the country, but the number of seats available for science students is limited compared to the HSC pass-outs. As a result, most of the science students move to the private universities, incurring high educational expenses.
Students from middle-income families primarily choose the old public universities such as Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University and Khulna University to study science subjects.
Bright students with good results apply to the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), but its capacity is merely about 1,000. Competition, naturally, is extremely high. Students getting GPA-5 were elated after the results were out but are now under pressure, making hectic preparations for the admission tests scheduled to begin from next month. Besides, students have to take separate admission tests for different public and private universities, consuming extra time, money, and energy. Several attempts have been made to hold entry tests for public universities with the same set of questions, but efforts yielded no results because of the conflicting interests of various universities. A common admission test for all universities was expected to reduce pressure on students and guardians, enabling them to save the time, money, and energy they now expend moving from one part of the country to another to take part in the admission tests. Such cluster tests are at present only held by the country’s medical and dental colleges. In the absence of such tests, each university has its own set of separate question papers. As a result, all students who passed this year’s HSC exams would be under pressure, but the science students would face some extra challenge because of limited seats in desired universities.
This year, only 2,751 students from the humanities, Islamic studies/music got GPA-5, while the total number of passed students was 3,45,536. In Business Studies, the total number students getting GPA-5 is 4,731 students, while the number of those passing from this group was 2,25,791.
