Projects worth Tk 324cr taken to boost fish production

The government has taken 20 development projects for the fisheries sector in 2016-17 FY, aiming to achieve the target of producing 45.52 metric tonnes of fish at the end of 2021, reports UNB. “An amount of Tk 324.45 crore has been allocated for implementation of these projects,” according to an official document obtained by UNB. A senior official at the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry said the government has taken these projects to involve more people in the activities to increase fisheries resources.
“These projects will help boost fish production in the country and meet the protein demand of people,” the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry official told the news agency. The projects are Bangladesh marine fisheries capacity building, establishing fishery diploma institutes in Gopalganj, Kishoreganj and Sirajganj, rehabilitation and development of fisheries structures for supply of quality fish seed and fry, fishermen enlistment and ID card distribution, integrated agricultural productivity, sweet water shrimp farming expansion (2nd phase), fish farming development and expansion in CHT (3rd Phase), ‘Beel Nursery’ establishment in open water and expansion.
Besides, society-based fish farming at Nimgachhi, fish development in Rangpur division, brood bank establishment, Kuchia and crab farming in selected areas and research, fish farming development in greater Jessore district, strengthening fishery and aquaculture food safety and quality management system in Bangladesh, climate resilient ecosystem and livelihoods, enhancing aquaculture production for food security and rural development through better seed and feed production, fish farming technology expansion at union level (2nd Phase), fishery resource development in greater Comilla, boosting fish production through renovation of wetlands and enhanced coastal fisheries project.
Other than these projects, many projects of the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry are going on across the country, the official said.
According to a report
of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Bangla-desh is now the 4th major fish-producing country in the world as it has raised fish production to 35 lakh mts from 7.50 mts in the last three decades thanks to the steady growth in inland fish production from aquaculture.
