Marjan was a Shibir ‘shathi’

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg
Marjan was a Shibir ‘shathi’

Nurul Islam Marjan, mastermind of the Holey Artisan Bakery attack, was a student of the Arabic Department of Chittagong University (CU) (2012-13) and an associate (shathi) of the Islami Chhatra Shibir's (ICS's) CU unit.
Marjan used to stay at the Al-Hera cottage, adjacent to the university's Zero Point. The cottage is known to be a den of ICS activists. The university authorities and police confirmed that Marjan was an associate of the ICS's CU unit. “Yes, he was an associate of the organisation,” said Anwar Hossain, assistant proctor of the CU.
“In November 2015, the police raided cottages adjacent to the university and found important information in the laptop of then secretary of the ICS's CU unit. In it, the police came across the name of Nurul Islam Marjan,” added Anwar Hossain.
“Marjan was a leader of Shibir. His rank was Shathi. This has been confirmed after talking to the CU authorities. He was not an accused in any case filed with Hathazari police station relating to sabotage carried out by Shibir,” said Md Mosi ud-Daula Reza, additional superintendent of police (north) of Chittagong district. The CU authorities said yesterday (Tuesday) that Marjan has been absent since February 14, 2015. In the second year final exams, he appeared for six papers out of 10. “Marjan is not our student now as his studentship was cancelled automatically. As per university rules, a student has to get enrolled within two years after completing one year. But he did not get admitted for his third year classes in the last two years,” said Prof. Dr Iftekhar
Uddin Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of the CU. Asked why they did not provide a list of absent students to the police, he replied: “As the chairman of the Arabic Department was ill, he could not provide the list. Other department teachers did not provide lists within the stipulated time. We have now directed all provosts, deans of faculties and chairmen of departments to provide updated lists within two days."
