Law enforcers are trying to identify all the associates of militant Nirbas Islam, as he is thought to be one of the key planners and recruiters of recent militant attacks. Nibras, a student of North South University, is one of the six militants killed during the Army led operation at Holey Artisan Bakery on June 1 after twenty hostages were killed there by armed militants. Investigators have kept some students of different private universities, including some of North South University and Monash University, Malaysia under their scanner to identify any link with Nibras Islam, who had studied in both these universities. Hasnat Reza, a detained suspect in the Gulshan attack, is also a former teacher of North South University (NSU). Meanwhile, militant Abir Rahman, who was killed in Sholakia attack, was also a final grader of NSU BBA program. Abir lived in the same mess with militant Nibras at Sonalipara in Jhenidah and introduced himself as a cousin of Nibras, police officials told The Independent.
According to sources with law enforcing agencies, the Education Ministry of Malaysia is looking into Monash University student Nirbas Islam’s link to militancy, and investigators are also regularly communicating with the university to know how many Bangladeshi students may have been recruited by Nirbas in Malaysia.
It may be noted that Shehzad Rouf alias Arko, a US citizen who was killed during a police raid in a Kalyanpur militant den, went missing in February this year, the same month militants Nirbas and Tawsif also went missing.
Shezad Rouf was also a close friend of Nibras Islam, the investigators said, hinting that Nirbas was one of the key militant leaders planning the recent attacks including in Gulshan and Sholakia. Another purported attacker in Gulshan, Meer Saameh Mubasheer, also went missing on February 29. Officers investigating militant attack cases suspect that several militants killed in the Kalyanpur raid had been with Nibras and Abir in Jhenaidah. One of the killed militants, Taj-ul-Haque Rashik was also a student of NSU.
In 2013, following the murder of blogger Rajib Haidar in the capital’s Mirpur on February 15, police on March 2 arrested five NSU students— Faisal bin Nayeem alias Dwip, 22, and Maksudul Hassan Anik, 23, Ehsan Reza Rumman, 23, and Naim Sikder Irad, 19, and Nafis Imtiaz, 22, over the murder, who later admitted their involvement in the murder. Referring to all the allegation of militant attacks against NSU students, a senior investigator said Nirbas was one of the key organizers of the militant outfit carrying out the recent attack.
DMP Deputy Police Commissioner Masudur Rahman, also the spokesman of the city police, said, “As part of our thorough investigation, we are identifying all the associates of militant Nirbas Islam.”
According to our investigation, he was directly involved in several militant attacks before the July 1 Gulshan attack, the official added.
