Flood situation deteriorates further in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: Overall flood situation in chars and Brahmaputra river basin areas including the low lying areas of the main land of four upazilas of the district deteriorated further as the river marked rise more till 9 am yesterday, reports BSS. The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said the water level in the Brahmaputra rose by 20 cm and the Ghagot 17 cm and the Teesta 13 cm during the period due to incessant rainfall and onrush of hilly waters from the upstream.
Today morning, the Brahmaputra was flowing at Fulchharighat point of the district 80 cm and the Ghagot at New Bridge Road point of the district town 85 cm above their respective danger levels, said the officials.
The water level of the Teesta, another major river of the district, also rose by 13 cm during the period and it was flowing just below its danger mark at Sundarganj point of the district, sources said. With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra river, the chars and the river basin areas including main land of Sundarganj, Sadar Fulchhari and Saghata upazila had been inundated.
Apart from this, with the rise of water level in the rivers, the erosion took serious turn at many places along the both sides of the river including Kamarjani and Goghat areas under Sadar upazila creating immense sufferings and much anxiety to the people, Saddam Hossain Pabon, a social worker.
Many erosion and flood victims had taken shelter on the nearby flood control embankments with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds and were passing their days and nights miserably for want of food and drinking water, he also said.
A total of 116 government primary schools of the upazilas had been closed and the academic activities had also been suspended there temporarily as the school and its field went under 3 to 5 feet deep water due to flood, said AKM Amirul Islam, district primary education officer.
Additional district magistrate M. Mizanur Rahman, who is performing duty as an acting deputy commissioner, said the Ministry of the Disaster Management and Relief allotted 650 tonnes of rice as general relief and cash TK 16 lakh for the flood victims here to meet their urgent demand so far.
