Nojiul Alam Khan
How did you get into the music business? Who inspired you?
My father, freedom fighter late Abu Bakar Siddique, used to sing Nazrul Sangeet. He used to find the time and make me sing with him. Today, because of him, I am a musician. I started singing when I was in class 5; then I got admitted to Rangpur Shilpakala Academy. For 12 years, I sang classical songs, then slowly I shifted towards rock music. Over the years, I have been selected as national champion (gold medalist) at Jatiya Shishu-Kishore Sangskritik Protijogita (national children’s cultural competition) for ghazals. I was also awarded the best Vocal Award in 2007 D’ROCKSTARS.
What’s your outlook on today’s music industry?
Well, the late 1980s and early 90s were the golden eras of Bangladeshi band music. I can only express my views on band music because I always have been a band member. Initially, band music was not accepted that easily, but with time people’s views have changed. But there is still some frustration, like copyright issues. However, there is hope as buying music is becoming more digitalised.
Please tell us about your albums released so far.
So far, I have released four mixed albums _ Canvas, Prachir, Alpona and Palash, featuring Neelar Gaan _ with various prominent singers of our country. My first solo album, ‘Lets Play’, was released in 2011 from DLM Music. I also have three songs in mixed albums with my former band, RadioActive.
What advice would you give to young singers trying to get a start?
Bangladesh is a land of music. We can find music everywhere, wherever we look. I find music in nature. I would suggest to newcomers: understand nature first. I believe that once your mind and nature are connected, you can create music. And always believe in yourself, that you can do it.
What are your future goals?
Recently, I have joined the popular rock band Warfaze as their lead vocalist. This is like a dream come true for me. There are huge challenges on my shoulders now. We are making albums, focussing on upcoming international tours and local shows. I believe Warfaze is a legend-making factory. I want to take my band to the next level.
