Joya in New York show on birthday today

Today is the birthday of celebrated National Film Award winning actress Joya Ahsan. However, she is not in the country on her special day. She is halfway across the world in another continent, to take part in the 36th North American Bengali Conference (NABC), also known as the ‘Banga Sammelan’ 2016. The mega event will be held at the historical premises of Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York City from today till July 3. DhakaLive has news that to take part in the mega event, Joya has flown to New York from Kolkata. Nazrul Sangeet singer Ferdous Ara will be performing at the event, alongside Laisa Ahmed Lisa. Joya shared her thoughts via telephone from New York about her special day, “I have a few friends and relatives living in New York. However, since I will be participating in the ‘Banga Sammelan’, there is not that scope to celebrate my birthday with them. Those of us who will be together on the day might do something in between the show. However this is true that on this day, I miss everyone from my family, my countrymen, my fans, well wishers and supporters. It would have been a lot of fun if I got to celebrate the day properly.”
She shared a touching story about her most memorable and favourite birthday gift, “When I was three years old, my friend Shampa made clay stove (‘maatir chula’). To me, that is the best gift I have ever received.” The actress also fondly remembers her father, the late AS Maswood and misses him greatly on her birthday.
Joya Ahsan made her film debut through ‘Doob Satar’ directed by Nurul Alam Atique. For her stellar film performances, she was awarded with the National Film Award on two occasions for Nasiruddin Yousuf Bachchu’s ‘Guerrilla’ and then again for Redwan Roni’s ‘Chorabali’.
The award winning actress has also been making a name for herself beyond the borders. She acted in an Indian Bengali film ‘Rajkahihi’ directed by Srijit Mukherji last year. To recognise her role in this film, she was awarded in the 16th edition of Tele-Cine Award ceremony recently. Many of her films are awaiting release soon.
