Proposed budget will reduce poverty, disparity, MPs say

Terming the proposed budget for fiscal year 2015-16 as pro-people, time befitting and investment-friendly, lawmakers yesterday said the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would be able to carry forward the country towards desired development through implementing the budget in line with its Vision 2021, reports BSS.Taking part in the general discussion on the national fiscal plan, they said the finance minister’s proposals for expanding tax net reducing import dependence, taking various anti-poverty and social safety net progarmmes, increasing power generation capacity, boosting export, expansion of nationwide smooth connectivity and development of infrastructure would play a positive role in accelerating economic growth.
They said the proposed budget with 7.0 percent GDP growth is possible to implement if corruption in all sectors can be combated properly and political stability prevails across the country.
Finance Minister A M A Muhith placed a Taka 2 lakh 95 thousand 100 crore national budget for fiscal year 2015-16 (FY16) on June 4 in parliament with a 7.0 percent GDP growth target.

Md.  Yahia Chowdhury took part in the discussion in the parliament.
Social Welfare Minister Mohsin Ali hailed the budget terming it pro-people and development target oriented where priority was also given to poverty alleviation and social safety net programmes.
Giving a salient feature of the proposed budget, he said allocation in agriculture; education, infrastructure, communication, health, power and energy, human resource and women development would certainly play an important role in overall development of the country.
He recalled the sad history of grisly grenade attack on August 21, on an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue and demanded the allocation of Taka 10,000 per month for the grenade attack victims for their treatment.
The minister referred to the uncompromising leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on various difficult occasions and said, “Despite repeated obstacles created by the BNP-Jamaat quarters along with militant forces through the grenade, arson and petrol bombs attacks, the country is heading towards development which also got appreciation of Naredra Modi and other head of the states in the East and West.”
State Minister for Social Welfare Advocate Promod Mankin MP while participating in the discussion hoped that the proposed budget would help the government ensure a balanced development in the country.
“We want to turn the dreams of the people into a reality by transforming Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021 and achieving desired development through implementation of the proposed budget,” he added.
He demanded of the government to announce a separate ministry for 20 lakh indigenous people living in the plain land or incorporate them in the ministry of social welfare and announce a separate budget for them.
Mainuddin Khan Badal of JSD thanked the authorities concerned for placing a time-befitting budget saying it would pave the way of achieving government ‘s target in line with the Vision-2021.


Referring to politics of confrontation and destruction designed by the BNP-Jamaat quarters, he said despite repeated conspiracies of the vested quarters, Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina is working relentless to rebuild Bangladesh with a vision of upgrading it to a developed country by 2041.
Due to government’s pragmatic fiscal policy, he said, the number of extreme poor has gone down to a significant level over the last five years, squeezing disparity between rich and poor and bringing about a positive change in the overall living standard across the country, he told the House.
He also urged BNP-Jamaat to shun the politics of petrol bomb and arson attacks in the greater interest of the country and its people.
Opposition bench member Peer Fazlur Rahamn said the new budget is possible to implement if corruption in different sector was curbed.
About the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) with India, he said, “It’s definitely an achievement for the country and its enclave peoples. I also want to thank BNP leaders as they lastly realized the fact by extending their support for the LBA.”
Earlier today’s House proceedings began at 10:45 am with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
