Dairy farms have made people self-reliant at three villages in Pakoria union near Sherpur town. At least 2,000 people have changed their lot by rearing cows and selling milk in the local markets of the district. Pakoria East para, Batiapara and Tilkandi are the three villages in Sadar Upazila known for milk production. Every day, about 600 maunds of milk (one maund= about 40kilograms) is being produced from about 5000 cows in those villages, said local sources, adding that the milk of these villages is now fulfilling the demand of most of the sweetmeat shops and local milk markets of the district. The milk hub of the district is now called ‘milk villages’, which are six kilometers away from the district town.
‘Rouha’, an ancient beel (large water body), which flows by the sides of these villages has further enriched the lifestyle of the people there. In the dry season, the villagers are busy in agricultural production while in the rainy season they thrive on catching fish. But the dairy business came as a boon for them for they remain busy in earning money round the year. Every poor family has at least one milch cow and every rich family has 5-20 cows in these villages, said locals. There are many families who can produce about 40 litres of milk from cows every day. Per litre of cow milk is being sold at TK 50/60 in the local markets of the district in this month of holly Ramzan, said housewife Sabina Yasmin.
At least 5000 cows are found in farms in those villages and each cow can give at least 5 litres of milk every day on an average, said milkman Badal Mia. Local and hybrid cows are being raised in these villages, where hundreds of people are found busy in the afternoon collecting milk and carrying jars, gallons, and jugs full of milk. One can see them moving in scores on bicycles, rickshaws or auto rickshaws or on foot to sell the milk in nearby markets. Milkmen, milkmaids and cowboys are found busy in milking, collecting and the harnessing animal food in the fields.
According to the District Samabya (cooperative) Office, three separate samabya committees named as ‘Samabya Sanchy Samoty’ have been formed in the three milk villages in Pakoria Union. Every committee has a total of 37 members, who have received a total loan amounting to Tk 18, 50,000 for rearing cows. Every member took Tk 50,000 for buying cows. Bangladesh Samabya Bank Limited disbursed the loans among the milkmen.
