‘Akash Koto Dure’, ‘Gariwala’, to be screened in Nepal film fest

Two Bangladeshi films ‘Akash Koto Dure’ and ‘Gariwala’, produced under the banner of Impress Telefilm, will be screened at ‘The Fourth Nepal Human Rights International Film Festival (NHRIFF)’ in Nepal. The festival has been set to be held at Lalitpur Staff College Auditorium in Kathmandu from today. Among over 30 films from around the world, ‘Akash Koto Dure’ will be screened on June 12 at 2:15pm. Besides, another Bangla full feature film of Impress Telefilm ‘Gariwala’ directed by Ashraf Shishir will be screened on June 11 at 12:30pm. The film is about two young brothers and their incredible journey in life.
The film ‘Akash Koto Dure’ is about an orphan boy named Bichchhu, who escapes from the torturing hands of the authority of the slum. After the escape, he meets two other orphan boys in the city who steal for a living. Moreover, the film deals with various human right issues and as such acquired a place in the National Human Rights International Film Festival.
This film has also been screened in the Mumbai Women’s International Film Festival 2013, 10th Geneva International Film Festival 2014, 7th Bengaluru International Film Festival 2014, 5th Calcutta Children’s Film Festival 2015, 15th Rainbow Film Festival - London 2014, Trans Saharian Jagora International Film Festival, Morocco.
This film is produced by Impress Telefilm and Versa Media. Its director is Samia Zaman, the Editor and CEO of Ekattor TV. The audience knows Samia Zaman as a news presenter and talk show host. But she also has a longing for filmmaking and this is her second film, the first one being “Rani Kuthir Baki Itihash”.
With this film it is hoped that Children’s Rights might raise alarm in the minds of the viewers and they can work for this issue. In the festival Shahnewaz Kakoli, a renowned Bangladeshi director, will be present as a member of the jury board and Kazi Shahriar Parvez Rajon, executive producer of Impress Telefilm, will attend the event as a representative of Bangladesh.
In the sidelines of the festival, number of film workshops will be held during the three days. The workshops will be target to upcoming film-makers, grassroots human rights defenders, and human rights activists working independently. The workshops will be based on different themes such as telling human rights stories through new media: how can we use the new media for promotion of human rights through video: Grassroots film-making: to train the grassroots human rights defenders to advocate against human rights violation and abuse through video and films. Also, there will be three panel discussions on the sidelines of the festival, titled ‘Women and Cinema’, ‘Dignity and Cinema’ and ‘Human Rights and Cinema’. Various experts on their respected fields will take part in these moderated discussions.
The target of this festival is to uphold the sufferings of people and to raise awareness about the basic human rights throughout the world. The theme of the festival will be focused on the issues of human rights and other issues prioritised by the United Nations. However, contextually, the film festival will focus on the issue of the voiceless people. Films made on the issues of marginalised communities will be emphasized upon. Films on woman, indigenous people, minority communities and child rights issues will be screened in the festival. Other issues such as enforced disappearances, transitional justice, peace and other human rights issues will be covered in the festival.
The film ‘Akash Koto Dure’ fits perfectly in the Festival considering its plot and story. It will gain global exposure through this event, which in turn will aid to raise awareness throughout the world about human rights. l
