“When I first came to Yun-nan in 1983, I found the people are kind, loyal, friendly and honest. I immediately fell in love with the land and people,” said Ted Sieong, chairman of the US/Indonesia International Daily News Group and execu-tive chairman of Kadin Indone-sia Komite China.

Ted Sieong came to Kun-ming especially to attend a series of activities marking the 20th anniversary of the “going out” strategy employed by Yun-nan Daily Press Group. In 1996, Yunnan Daily Press Group and the United States-based Inter-national Daily jointly launched the newsletter Yunnan Today . After 20 years, Yunnan Daily Press Group has built an all-me-dia matrix consisting of twelve newsletters published in seven languages, four periodicals, and two multilingual websites, making its presence felt in seven countries.

For Ted Sieong, it is re-markable that Yunnan Daily , as a local newspaper, was able to introduce Yunnan to the United States as early as 20 years ago.

In addition to Chinese newspa-pers, Yunnan Daily Press Group also releases newspapers in En-glish, Indonesian, Cambodian, Burmese and other Southeast Asian languages, setting up an example for its industry peers.

According to Ted Sieong, the English, Indonesian and Chinese versions of China•Yunnan have done a good job of introducing Yunnan to Indonesia, the Unit-ed States and the countries of Europe. In particular, the type setting of the Indonesian and  English versions of China•Yun-nan is very good. In the United States, China•Yunnan has show-cased an image of Yunnan that is continuously popular with readers.

Ted Sieong gave two pieces of advice on how to cope with the decline of print media. He said despite the impact of the Internet, print media will stand firm over the next five years, be-cause the development of the In-ternet still relies on content pro-duction. Ted Sieong encouraged print media to brave the various challenges posed by this new situation. Meanwhile, he sug-gested that media outlets should strengthen themselves and seek diversified development in mul-tiple industries, so as to drive and support the development of print media. He advised Yunnan Daily Press Group to cooperate with more mainstream media from other countries. He hoped that Yunnan Daily Press Group could go global, allowing the world to better understand Yun-nan. Ted Sieong also said that he is looking forward to witnessing the 30th anniversary of the “going out” strategy of Yunnan Daily Press Group!
