Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, 32, wife of Babul Akter, superintendent of police (SP) of Dhaka police headquarters, was killed at GEC Circle in Chittagong near her home at around 6:45am yesterday by a group of motorcycle-borne miscreants. The killers stabbed and shot dead the wife of the dashing police officer as she was going to put their son into a school-bus at GEC Circle yesterday. “Three persons, who were wearing black clothes and riding motorcycles, followed my mother and stabbed her. One of them shot my mother. Another of them took me away from the spot and made me stand in front of a shop. Then they left the place in a black microbus,” said Akter Mahmud Mahir, a second grade student of Cantonment Public School of Chittagong, whom the victim had gone to drop.
Mahmuda Khanam had been living with her son, Akter Mahmud Mahir, 8 and Tabassum Tajnim Tapur, 4, and a housemaid, Fatema, at flat no. D-7 at O.R. Nizam Road, in a complex named Equity Centrium, for three years. She had left her residence on foot to put her son into the school-bus at GEC Circle around 6:45am like everyday, said Sattar, caretaker of the house. “Hearing the sound of gunshots and seeing people running away, I went forward some 250 to 300 feet to the spot. I found Madam lying on the road in a pool of blood. Mahir was weeping, standing behind her,” added Sattar.
“We have seen CCTV footage. Three men riding motorbikes came from GEC area. One was wearing a helmet, two were without helmets. They stopped her at the spot. The first man stabbed her indiscriminately, then they shot her. We recovered two bullet shells and a live bullet from the spot,” said Poritosh Ghosh, deputy police commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (North). Police suspected a militant link with the incident as the police officer had unearthed many incidents carried out by militants.
“He has led several raids on militant hideouts and has played an important role in nabbing militants and busting their dens. For the motive of the murder, we suspect a militant link to the heinous crime,” added Ghosh.
Soon after the incident, CMP commissioner Iqbal Bahar rushed to the spot. He said, “Babul Akter has played a praiseworthy role in curbing militancy. Affected militants may have been annoyed, and may have carried out the killing.”
Bashir Ahmed, superintendent of police of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), said at the spot, “She was shot accurately with a small pistol like 7.6—a perfect target from close distance. The miscreants left the spot after ensuring her death, with a single bullet shot into the left side of her face.”
Soon after the incident, the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Intelligence Branch launched an investigation. CCTV footage has been collected from nearby establishments, said police.
“The police have started an investigation. A drive is on to nab the killers,” said Muktar Ahmed, deputy commissioner (Detective Branch) of the CMP.
Babul Akter, husband of the victim, has served as an additional deputy commissioner of the CMP’s Detective Branch. He was recently promoted to the rank of SP and posted at police headquarters. He came to Chittagong yesterday by helicopter, then visited Chittagong Medical College Hospital and wept profusely. He later went to his residence. He did not talk to the media.
Around 2.30pm, home minister Assaduzzaman Khan Kamal visited the spot and Babul Akter’s home. Returning from Babul’s home, he said to media-persons, “As Babul conducted many successful raids against militants, we think there are militant links to the incident. However, the investigation has started and, hopefully, the criminals will be nabbed soon,” he added.
The first namaz-e-janaza was held at Dampara Police Lines field around 3:30pm. After the namaz-e-janaza, the hearse with the body started its journey to Jhinadah district. She will be buried at the Akter family graveyard.
At the namaz-e-janaza, Zia Uddin Bablu, MP of Chittagong-9 constituency, Abdul Latif, MP, city mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, former mayor and city Awami League president ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, deputy inspector general (DIG) (Chittagong range) Shafiqul Islam and CMP commissioner Iqbal Bahar were present, among others.
Mozammel Haque, superintendent of Naogaon district police, told The Independent that the latest incident, an attack on the wife of a police officer, was a new phenomenon in the country. “We never thought such barbaric attacks could occur on our family members,” he said emotionally. Replying to a question on whether there is any instruction from the police headquarters to gear up security measures of the police officials’ family members, he said, “The police headquarters always gives us instructions to be alert and remain safe. All officials do not work to combat militancy. In my district, we are taking extra security measures for those officials who have been especially assigned to fight militancy and other types of terrorism.”
Natore superintendent of police Shyamal Kumar Mukherjee said, “We do not enhance security for family members of police officers for any single incident. Rather, we always remain very alert.” Replying to another question, he said, “Following the killing of the SP’s wife, we will not be demoralised. Rather, we shall use our full capabilities to eliminate militancy from the country.”
